Meet the Vision AMG, Mercedes’ show car that showcases the future of Mercedes-AMG. This is a four-seater, all-electric sports coupe concept that embraces electrification. It’s now clear that all-electric powertrains are now the next big thing for the folks from Affalterbach.

Mercedes-Benz uses the word "Vision" to characterize their prototype cars. The Vision AMG meanwhile, is being referred to as a "four-door, four-seater sports coupe." Now that’s not a surprise as the German brand was responsible for kick-starting the segment. The original Mercedes Benz CLS was a showstopper when it hit the road in the early 2000s. So this, in essence, is a continuation of that body style, but into the EV era.

Those who remember the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX from last year will undoubtedly see the resemblance here to that concept as well. The Vision AMG is in a way an evolution of the teardrop shape we saw on the Vision EQXX. While that car was all about luxury and efficiency, the Vision AMG is all about sportiness. You can almost immediately tell, given the AMG’s more hunkered-down stance.

Let’s start up front. Look closely and the three LED elements appear to form a stylized, three-dimensional Mercedes star. These headlights have a visual connection. A horizontal strip of light above what appears to be a grille with vertical backlit slats. The insignia on the hood matches the star on the AMG One supercar.

The tail-end is equally remarkable, and it once again reminds me of the Vision EQXX. The active spoiler and finely chamfered rear dramatically widen at the haunches. As for lighting, three LED rings are arranged in circular tubes to form the taillights. The expressive rear diffuser and AMG slapped in bold will leave you in no doubt about what you’re looking at.

As a fan of Formula 1, I am familiar with the green accent color on the silver arrows of the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team. Highlights include

Remember that AMG isn’t new to all-electric powertrains. About a decade ago, it dabbled with all-electric SLS AMG? Yes the same bright fluorescent SLS. Fast forward to today and AMG wants to release a proprietary EV by around 2025. Not only that, but many models will only be available in AMG form. Each one will be built on a modular basis that will be exclusive to AMG. EA. As a result, AMG will soon have its very own electrified platform.

At the heart of the Vision AMG lies a unique axial-flow unit, developed by Mercedes’ subsidiary YASA. It delivers more power than a traditional electric motor due to its compact and lightweight construction.

The difference between ICE vehicles and battery-electric vehicles will soon become blurred at Mercedes. As for the Vision AMG, it has a futuristic look thanks to its sporty, high-tech, design and outstanding proportions. With this concept, AMG has demonstrated that it is capable of more than just offering sportier versions of an existing vehicle.
