Many things have changed in the automotive industry over the last ten years or so, but one constant is German tuner Brabus' penchant for turning Mercedes-Benz vehicles into snarling (and usually controversial) beasts. The tuner seemingly has no interest in subtlety, discretion, or horsepower numbers below 500. When you factor in the massive presence of the Mercedes-AMG G63, Brabus had to do something different. The P 900 Rocket Edition is very different. And it's a truck.
On its own, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 is nothing to scoff at. Its 577-hp, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine pushes the boxy SUV from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. As impressive as those numbers are, for some they may not be nearly enough. The engineers at Brabus have transformed the G 63 into a ridiculously powerful, wide-body street animal they've dubbed the P 900 Rocket Edition.
If you find your eyes immediately darting to the rear of the Rocket, that's because Brabus has completely reworked the back half of the SUV and bolted on its bed module, transforming it into a pickup truck. Because, what's the point of having all this power and luxury if it can't also be practical, right? The body modifications don't stop there. A suite of carbon fiber body pieces not only widen the Rocket's stance but might shave a few pounds off the total weight.
Of course we can't detail this transformation without talking about what Brabus put under the hood of this supertruck. Brabus starts by ripping out the stock powerplant and disassembling it. The pistons are replaced with larger diameter forged units which are mated to "balanced, high-performance" connecting rods. From there a stroker kit is added which bumps displacement up to 4.5 liters. The turbochargers are upgraded and finally the ECU is reprogrammed. The result is a larger V-8 which now produces 900 horsepower and a whopping 922 ft-lb of torque.
Brabus failed to mention any transmission upgrades or any useful truck-ish information, like how much towing capacity this newly minted pickup can muster, but we don't imagine that the buyers of the Rocket are looking to tow an Airstream down to the lake for a weekend of fishing.
Speaking of, if you want your very own Brabus P 900 Rocket Edition, you'll need to move quickly. The tuner is only building 10 examples of this supertruck before retiring the badge. It is uncertain if any of those vehicles are meant for the American market, but we figure anyone who could afford to buy one of these will find a way.
