Following its victory at this year’s Tour de France, Cervelo has launched its new S5 to the public. This new model takes advantage of recent UCI technical regulation changes. It features a simplified front end for easier rider fit adjustment. Jumbo-Visma riders have been campaigning on this new bike for most of the 2022 season. And Cervelo has now released it as a series model for anyone to buy. The S5 is Cervelo’s aero road bike that was the weapon of choice for overall Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard. His Jumbo-Visma teammate and green jersey winner, Wout van Aert, was also on an S5.
Highlights of the new S5 include deeper profiled frame tubes, a new fork and increased tyre clearance. During the design phase, Cervelo took advantage of some recent rule changes by the UCI, which allow for deeper, more aerodynamic shapes. This allowed designers to deepen their aero proles and reduce the drag of what was already a very aero-efficient frame.
Cervelo claims that the new S5 offers a 65g reduction in aerodynamic weight, which translates into an 8.45-watt saving at 48km/h. These changes include a deeper head tube, bottom bracket area, and more aggressive trailing edges of the tubes. The fork has been updated with an aerodynamic nose and is now entirely carbon fibre.
